Michael Bloomberg said this about Jay-Z in the magazine.
Jay Z embodies so much of what makes New York New York. A kid from a tough neighborhood who grows up in public housing, overcomes lots of bad influences on the street, never lets go of his dream, makes it to the top — and then keeps going, pursuing new outlets for his creativity and ambition. When no one would sign him to a record contract, he created his own label and built a music empire — before going on to design clothing lines, open sports bars and, most recently, represent professional athletes. He’s an artist-entrepreneur who stands at the center of culture and commerce in 21st century America, and his influence stretches across races, religions and regions. He’s never forgotten his roots — “Empire State of Mind” was a love song to our city — and as a co-owner of the NBA Nets, he helped bring a major league sports team back to Brooklyn, not far from his old neighborhood. In nearly everything he’s tried, he’s found success. (He even put a ring on Beyoncé.) And in doing so, he’s proved that the American Dream is alive and well.
Jay-Z’s 2013 Made In America Festival is in full effect as the official lineup is announced today. Featuring big name acts such as Nine Inch Nails, A$APRocky, Calvin Harris, and Kendrick Lamar, among many others, Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway is set to go off Labor Day Weekend (August 31 – September 1).

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP and ROC NATION, founded by SHAWN “JAY Z” CARTER, have entered into a multi-year, worldwide partnership under which the ROC NATION music label will operate as a standalone label within the UMG family, effective immediately. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. As part of the agreement, forthcoming albums from JAY Z, RIHANNA and many others will be released through UMG worldwide.
SHAWN “JAY Z” CARTER said, “We are looking forward to working with LUCIAN and the incredible team he’s assembled at UNIVERSAL. We would like to applaud LUCIAN for collaborating with us to strike a new age deal. This agreement presents a unique opportunity for ROC NATION’s artists — being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major. I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG. It feels good to be home.”
The entertainment company Roc Nation announced Tuesday that they will launch Roc Nation Sports, a full-service sports management company led by Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) and partnering with Creative Artists Agency. The group also announced the signing of Roc Nation Sports’ first client, New York Yankees All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano.
“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Carter said in a statement.
